Shadow of the Colossus arrives on PS4 on February 6th. There's a beauty to this game's simplicity. Everything from galloping across the wide open meadows to simply standing next to the vast canyons to climbing the colossi themselves feels cinematic and epic, even while the world itself is strangely stark and sparse. It's also an excellent game to take screenshots in. Leave the shrine on your horse Agro and take out your beam sword. It's not the worst camera I've seen by any means. Gaius is one of 16 colossi in Shadow of the Colossus. Discover more unique Shadow Of The Colossus posters on Displate. And I'm always pressing the wrong button to make my horse gallop (it's triangle, but I keep thinking it ought to be X which makes Wander leap off the horse instead.) A slightly wonky camera does make the platforming bits a little more challenging, but I'm not sure that's a bad thing. detailed prints that will last a lifetime. This can be tricky especially on horseback. There are still some funky things like using your sword to catch the light of the sun and point you in the right direction. I will say that for whatever reason, perhaps simply that I'm more skilled as a gamer after many years of practice, I didn't find controlling Wander quite as difficult. I do think controls are slightly better this time around than they were on the PS2, but it's been such a long time since I played the game that it's a bit hard to say for sure. The remake doesn't really change any of this beyond the graphics. Each climb is a challenge that tests both your platforming ability and your ability to solve puzzles. It's also a puzzle-platformer, as each Colossus has weaknesses to exploit and climbing each to find those weaknesses involves puzzling out just how to get from the ground to the summit. In essence, this is a boss-fighting game. There are no minions, no human-sized bogies, no goblins or trolls. These gargantuan enemies are the only foes you fight in the game. There are too many video games called "Shadow" something.Īs Wander, players find themselves in a strange, forbidden land with a mysterious voice telling you that in order to save the girl, Mono, you have to go out and defeat sixteen colossi. The game was actually called Wander and the Colossus in Japan, a name I actually prefer quite a lot. You play as the aptly named Wander, a Link-esque figure with a sword, a bow and a horse. That should give you a pretty good sense of what the game looks and feels like on PlayStation 4. If you are unsure just use your sword, there is enough sun here. Turn about 45° to the left and ride all across the wide plain and aim for the dark place between the huge mountains. The hair effects are much more realistic now than in the original, which is nice. Pass the small stone hill to your left unto you are on a huge plain. Climb all the way up to Gaius' head and destroy the second sigil to take him down.Shadow of the Colossus gameplay. From there, leap to the platform around his waist and run around to Gaius' stomach, where you'll find the first sigil.Īfter destroying the stomach sigil, recover your grip on the waist platform before jumping back to Gaius' sword arm. Make your way up the Colossus' arm until you reach the platform by his elbow. If that happens, hold onto the edge of the sword like a ledge until it's level enough for you to climb up, then proceed. It's very likely that Gaius will recover before you can grab onto his arm. Wait for him to swing his sword again, making sure he hits regular dirt this time, then jump onto the blade while it's at ground level and run along it to reach his arm. When Gaius hits the stone circle with his sword, some of his armor will shatter, clearing the path for you to make your counterattack. If that happens, lure him further away from the circle and try again. In that sense it reminded me of Portal (an otherwise completely different game, obviously). If Gaius is too close to you when he prepares to attack, he may try to stomp on you instead of swinging his sword. Too often AAA titles stray from perfection by adding filler content to pad the duration, but SotC is a rare example of singleminded, focused design that doesn’t overstay its welcome and it pays off in spades.
